This is not the first time the two political figures will be showing their political strength in an election. In 2018, Fayose as Governor campaigned and canvassed for votes even more than the flagbearer of the People’s Democratic Party, Professor Olusola Kolapo Eleka. Many Nigerians knew then that the election is largely between Fayemi and Fayose.
It is no longer news that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed the 18th of June, 2022 for the Ekiti state gubernatorial election.
Ekiti state, which was created in 1996 has been governed by the two major political parties since the beginning of this present democratic dispensation.
Barely a year to the next governorship election, political gladiators in the state are making preparations to ensure that they win the election and hold power for the next four years.
Those who have a keen interest in the forthcoming gubernatorial election believe that the election will show who is powerful politically between former Governor Ayodele Peter Fayose and the incumbent Governor, John Kayode Fayemi.
Ayodele Peter Fayose, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party is supporting the candidacy of a former member of the state House of Assembly, Otunba Bisi Kolawole. The incumbent State Governor who is also the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum is yet to publicly announce who he will be supporting to succeed.
Ayodele Fayose, who is known for his outspokenness and political astuteness is one of the most popular political figures in the southwestern state while Fayemi, who is rumoured to be aiming at the presidency will make sure his political party wins the governorship election in 2022.
Recall that some years back, Ayodele Peter Fayose defeated Kayode Fayemi to become the Governor of the state for a second term.
The forthcoming Ekiti election will be quite interesting and full of suspense. Kayode Fayemi and Ayodele Fayose will not be contesting for the election but it is glaring that the two political gladiators will want to show their political strength.
