Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has explained why his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, refused to give over power to him in 2015.
Amaechi served as governor of Rivers State for two terms and is presently the Minister of Transportation.
According to Wike, in 2015, Amaechi refused to hand over the state’s aircraft and other assets to him because he had decided to transfer the state’s aircraft and other assets to his personal property.
Wike explained the circumstances surrounding the state-owned Legacy 600 jet and Dash 8 plane recovered in Munich at a stakeholders’ meeting at Government House in Port Harcourt yesterday.
Wike said that his administration had retrieved the state-owned Legacy 600, which had been abandoned by the Amaechi-led government since 2012.
The Governor revealed that the Amaechi-led government declined to form a transition committee in 2015 to appropriately take over to his then-incoming government.
This, he said, indicated that the Amaechi-led administration was desperate to convert State assets and property for personal benefit.
The Governor stated that if Dakuku Peterside had won the 2015 governorship election in the state, there would have been no mention of the plane.
According to Wike: “The whole essence of why they took the plane to Germany was because the former governor felt that he was going to install a governor in 2015.
“If Dakuku had become governor, that was the end of the plane. That was just the whole essence, because he felt Dakuku must be governor and to the glory of God he did not become…that is why the plane is coming back latest the end of March this year.”
According to Wike, the last time the Dash 8 jet was heard of was when Amaechi refused to sell it to Victor Odili, a former governor of the state.
Odili had sought to acquire the plane for $5 million, he revealed.
Between the Cross River State administration and Odili, Wike asked who bought the plane.
“Out of that $6 million, Liyel had paid N100m as deposit. Up till now, where is the balance? Where is our Dash 8? If they sold it to Cross River State, where is the balance? Asset that ought to be documented and handed over to who is coming in,” he lamented.
Incredible points. Outstanding arguments. Keep up the amazing effort.
