According to the Anambra State Government, work on Thursday to demolish illegally built structures in Onitsha got underway.
This information was provided to journalists in Awka by Christian Aburime, the Anambra governor’s press secretary.
Several erroneous structures along the canals in Fegge and the surrounding areas of Onitsha would be demolished, according to the press secretary.
“The exercise which began from Bida Road by Modebe Avenue, Fegge, Onitsha, is expected to be extended to other parts of the town,”.
He said that after the more than two months’ warning given to building owners and developers in April of this year had expired, the demolition team in Onitsha’s Fegge neighborhood started working on the project.
The security and generator homes of Prophet Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere of Mountain of Holy Ghost Intervention Deliverance Ministries, Onitsha aka Odumeje, were among the affected structures.
An eyewitness who requested anonymity said that the team overseeing the work physically assaulted the Prophet when he attempted to stop the workers from destroying his structures.
“When the team arrived in company of armed security operatives, we saw them struggling with the Prophet while the operator of the bulldozer was busy demolishing the structures,” the source said.
The source added that the demolition of the buildings built across Nwangene stream was taking place in accordance with the implementation of the Onitsha Urban Renewal Plan.
