Willie Obiano, the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC.
InsightnaijaTV earlier reported that the former governor was apprehended by the anti-graft agency on his way out of the country on Thursday night at the Lagos International Airport.
The news came just hours after he turned over authority to Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the state’s new governor.
Wilson Uwajaren, the commission’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest in an interview with BBC Pidgin.
Obiano was on the EFCC’s watchlist before the changeover on Thursday, according to the commission’s spokesman.
He said, “Obiano has been on our watchlist for sometime now. He had immunity as a governor and that is why we could not arrest him before now.
“Today he lost the immunity and was traveling out of the country before we finally arrested him”.
