Dayo Kujore, a veteran Juju musician, died at the age of 63.
According to his daughter, Dayo Kujore, Kujore, one of the pioneers of the Nigerian-styled musical art form, died on Monday.
The circumstances surrounding the ‘Soko Extra’ crooner’s death have yet to be revealed, as the family is expected to make a formal announcement.
His debut on the music scene in 1991, with the album Super Jet, drew a lot of attention. He began his career at a time when veterans such as Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade, and Sir Shina Peters were already well-known.
He began playing the guitar when he was about ten years old.
He went on to become a guitarist in his church, bringing fame and fortune to his family. His skill on the guitar earned him the nickname “Wonder Boy.”
He attended African Church Primary School before moving on to African Church Secondary School for his secondary education.
He then went on to Sabo Technical School in Ojuelegba, Lagos State, where he studied engineering. He looked up to the late Prince Adekunle and played lead guitar on albums such as ‘Aditu Ede Adekunle Gbede,’ ‘Eda Nreti Eleya,’ ‘Nibo Left Toluwasi,’ ‘You Tell Me That You Love Me Baby,’ and many others.
From him, his role model at the time, he also learned how to run a music band and how to properly arrange music.
His debut album, ‘Ha! Jesu Mbe,’ was released in 1977.
Others include ‘Elevation,’ ‘Wisdom,’ ‘Joy,’ ‘Easy Life,’ and the popular ‘Soko Xtra.’
