The US government has reacted to Nigeria’s federal government’s move to withdraw the country’s ban on Twitter activities.
The US government applauded the decision to restore Twitter services in Nigeria, according to a statement released by the US mission in Nigeria on Thursday.
It also expressed interest in continuing to engage users on the microblogging app for information sharing and economic progress.
The US mission tweeted: “We welcome the restoration of Twitter’s services by @NigeriaGov. Social media remains a vital tool for expression, information sharing, and economic growth.”
“We are pleased that access for Nigerians is #BackOn & look forward to continuing to engage and grow with you here.”
According to insightmaijaTV, the federal government announced on Wednesday that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the lifting of the suspension on Twitter activities in Nigeria.
Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement and Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), made the president’s instruction public in a statement on Wednesday.
The suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria will be lifted at 12 a.m. on January 13, 2022, according to the announcement.
According to Abdullahi, the clearance came after the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, wrote a memo to the President.
In June 2021, the Buhari government halted Twitter’s activities in Nigeria, claiming that the platform was being used to undermine the country’s sovereignty and security.
After the government and the organization achieved an agreement on the agreed-upon mode of operations, the service was resumed, InsightnaijaTV reports.
