The University of Calabar (UniCal) has decided to raise undergraduate tuition by more than 100%, according to the university’s management.
According to a statement released by the university’s spokesperson, Mr. Effiong Eyo, to reporters in Calabar on Monday, the Senate of the university had an emergency meeting on Friday and decided to review the tuition.

The management stated that maintaining the university’s reputation for high academic standards and the present economic climate were the reasons behind the rise.
In 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions, the upward review will be implemented, according to the statement and in accordance with the new increment, the cost of non-science courses would now be N111,000, N91,500, and N114,000 for new students, returning students, and final year students, respectively. They also have to pay N36,500, N21,500, and N21,500, in that order.
Likewise, they have N38,500, N21,500, and N21,500 to pay as third party dues, respectively.
Prior to the increase, the average student’s tuition was N64,050 for first-year students, N52,050 for final-year students, and N49,500 for returning students, depending on the department.
