Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been eliminated from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after losing in the round of 16 to Tunisia on Sunday night.
The Eagles, coached by Austin Eguavoen, were defeated 1-0 by the North Africans, who had proceeded to the knockout stage as one of the four best losers in the group stage.
Nigeria won all three games in their group, defeating Egypt’s Pharaohs 1-0 before going on to win 3-1 and 2-0 against Sudan and Guinea-Bissau, respectively.
However, compared to their previous encounters, the Super Eagles played at a slower tempo on Sunday, sharing nearly equal ball control with the Tunisians, who had complained that COVID-19 had destroyed their camp.
Tunisia seized the lead soon after the break and held on till the end following a goalless first half in which Nigeria had several squandered chances.
Tunisia advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship ahead of all-conquering Nigeria thanks to a goal by Youssef Msakni in the 47th minute.
The Eagles were reduced to ten men after VAR overturned a yellow card given to substitute Alex Iwobi for a late hard tackle, and the Everton midfielder was issued a red card.
The victory is a retaliation for Tunisia, who were upset 1-0 by the Super Eagles in the 2019 edition’s third-place playoffs in Egypt.
Burkina Faso advanced to the quarterfinals on Sunday after defeating Gabon on penalties.
