An officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC was knocked down by a trailer driver this morning at Ojota Tollgate area of Lagos while trying to evade arrest for traffic violation.
In the process, the trailer driver crashed into a private vehicle which left the occupant on the driver side injured.
The incident occurred at the relaunch of Operation Scorpion ll targeted at tackling the menace of Road Traffic Crashes caused by unlatched trucks and trailers.
The injured officer and the occupant of the private vehicle, a female were immediately rushed to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency center few meters away from the scene of the incident at the ojota tollgate area.
The driver of the trailer and his assistant were chased and arrested by a combined team comprising officials of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection unit, the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the FRSC.
Zonal Commander, FRSC in charge of Lagos and Ogun States, Assistant Corps Marshal Imoh Etuk said the driver was in their custody and the injured receiving treatment.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Lagos State, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide said the special operation was being carried out in all corridors from Ojota in Lagos, Mowe to Ogere in Ibadan.
He explained that since the commencement of the exercise this morning over 35 trucks of different categories have been impounded for various violations.
Some of the drivers whose vehicles were impounded tested positive to alcohol after a breathalyzer test and others for overloading and over speeding.
The exercise which is going to be a Continuous one is also targeted at driving without valid driver’s licence, expired or worn-out tyres, dangerous driving and Speed Limit Violation.
