Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, thinks that the union of Nigeria’s opposition parties will aid in creating a more formidable front against the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is currently in power.
“Today, during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council Nigeria (IPAC), I emphasised the importance of protecting our democracy,” stated Atiku, who made the statement in Abuja on Tuesday while hosting the IPAC’s national executive committee which was led by its National President Yabagi Sani. I voiced my concerns about the APC’s policies, which are pushing Nigeria closer to a one-party dictatorship. I asked Yabagi Sani’s IPAC to mobilise opposition parties to create a more formidable front against this danger.

I criticised INEC for conducting poor elections, including discrepancies in voter numbers. I called for the National Assembly to prioritise constitutional and electoral reforms, in particular electronic voting reforms, to ensure transparent elections and protect our democracy. I believe democracy, despite its flaws, is the best form of government, and I am committed to working with others in providing its preservation in Nigeria.”
