After Shina Peller called for the collapse of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and its merger with the Nigeria Police Force, the NSCDC purportedly withdrew its personnel attached to him.
Peller, who represents the lseyin/ltesiwaju/Kajola/lwajowa Federal Constituency in Oyo State in the House of Representatives, proposed the law through the National Security And Civil Defence Corps (Repeal and Transition) Bill 2022, which passed the first reading on Tuesday.
InsightnaijaTV reports that the law aims to define norms and processes for the transfer of the Corps’ assets and people to the Nigeria Police Force.
The bill also calls for the creation of a transition management committee to oversee the security agency before it is absorbed into the police force.
Peller said he sponsored the bill to address the fragmentation of security resources across different competing agencies in the country, speaking on the House floor on Tuesday.
Peller asked the Green Chamber to ensure the proposed legislation’s successful passage, adding that the proliferation of security services is counterproductive and a waste of precious resources.
Peller stated that the NSCDC’s activities have become a duplication of police functions, resulting in needless disputes, and that the NSCDC’s duties are being performed by the police.
He assured Nigerians, however, that no job will be lost as a result of the agency’s demise, saying that the agency’s assets and staff will be integrated into the police force.
