The Nigerian Senate abolished the direct primary election method on Wednesday.
The Senate’s stance came in response to a conference committee amendment recommending that “the direct primary mode of election be eliminated.”
In clause 85 of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2021, the direct primary was replaced with three options: direct, indirect, and consensus.
Remember that a national protest took place following the annulment of the election, which forced Babangida to step aside and hand over power to Ernest Shonekan as the head of an interim national government on August 27, 1993.
A few weeks later, Abacha staged a coup, restoring military rule to Nigeria.
