The National Universities Commission (NUC) has been asked by the House of Representatives to defer the implementation of an increase in university tuition fees.
This was stated in a motion by Aliyu Sani Madaki, who noted that the universities that increased their tuition costs included Bayero University, Kano; the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; the University of Uyo; the University of Maiduguri; Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike; and Federal University, Dutse, among others.

The lawmakers were concerned that the hike would disrupt the studies of many students who could not afford the fees, and that while many would be forced to postpone their studies, others might drop out entirely.
The lawmakers also expressed concern that the raise would exacerbate the country’s already combustible position, citing student threats that could lead to an insurrection against the Federal Government, with disastrous ramifications for the country as a whole.
Lawmakers were also concerned that the recent increase in school fees by universities and Unity secondary schools was occurring in the midst of the country’s worsening poverty, inflation, high unemployment, and the recent fuel price hike, and so they asked the Federal Government to reverse the recent increase in school fees.
