The House of Representatives ordered security services to remove various checkpoints from highways leading to the Southeast on Thursday.
This followed the acceptance of a resolution by Obinna Chidoka, a member from Anambra State’s Idemili North and South Federal constituencies, at the plenary in Abuja.
Chidoka, who was pushing the motion, mentioned that the Lagos-Onitsha Road has up to 60 checkpoints.
He said that the checkpoints had been converted into tollgates in order to collect money from vehicles.
On December 1, the House authorized Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, to eliminate all illegal and unnecessary roadblocks across the country’s highways.
Chidoka said: “These multiple checkpoints coupled with the terrible condition of the roads cause unnecessary traffic buildup on the roads with untold hardship to users.”
As a result, the House ordered the checks to be removed immediately in order to ensure free flow of traffic in the South East.
