The Premier League has blocked Burnley’s bid to save Victor Moses from the agony of being stuck in limbo in wartime Russia.
Moses, a former Chelsea winger, is free of contract until June 30 of this year and can be signed under a FIFA and UEFA special dispensation.
Due to Russia’s war on Ukraine, the statutes allowing transfers have been temporarily amended.
Moses has been offered the chance to play again, earn a salary, and be reunited with his family in England by Burnley, but the Premier League has refused to accept such a request, citing the competition’s sports integrity as a reason.
La Liga has allowed clubs to sign war-affected footballers, with Sheffield United becoming the first English club to sign a player – Filip Uremovic – after his contract with a Russian club was temporarily halted.
The Premier League has been chastised for its position.
“We need to do everything we can to help players get out of Russia, a country led by a dictator,” former Finland captain Tim Sparv told Sky Sports News.
“We need to give them the chance to go and play somewhere where they feel safe. This is a humanitarian issue.”
On the basis of sporting integrity, Serie A and the Bundesliga have similarly prohibited clubs from exploiting the special permission.
It had appeared that a joint bid from the UK and Ireland would be the only bid for the tournament, but on Wednesday, Russia and Turkey surprised everyone by putting their names forward to host the tournament, despite FIFA and UEFA’s current suspension of their clubs and national teams due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russia and Turkey have also expressed interest in hosting Euro 2032, with Italy vying for the right to host the event in 2032.
In September 2023, host countries for the Euro 2028 and Euro 2032 competitions will be chosen.
