Mr. Ben Okolo, the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa, confirmed the death of a police officer by his colleague on Friday in Yenagoa.
Okolo stated that he had ordered the suspect’s detention and an investigation into the incident.
Mr. Asinmi Butswat, the state police spokesman, confirmed the stabbing and issued an order for an inquiry in a statement.
Sgt. Governor Akpoboloukeme, an off-duty police officer, stabbed his colleague, Sgt. Sapele Eyeridideke, to death after a small misunderstanding.
Butswat revealed that the incident took place on November 4, 2021, in Edepie, Yenagoa.
When he was apprehended on the East/West Road, the culprit fled the scene and attempted to flee to a neighboring state.
According to an eyewitness, the two cops, who are cousins, attended a wedding celebration at a prominent hotel in Yenagoa, where the dead cracked a joke while sitting on a table.
The suspect was not pleased with the prank and reacted violently.
The cousins were on the verge of a brawl when friends intervened and calmed them down.
The two cousins left the venue believing they were going to separate homes.
Rather of returning home, Akpobolokeme pursued Eyeridideke to a remote location and stabbed him in the left rib cage with a dagger, killing him instantly.
According to the eyewitness, the body has been deposited to a mortuary.
