Following the alleged drowning of an SS3 student of the school, ThankGod Emumirigwe, Delta State Police Command officers detained the principal of Government Technical College, Ogor, Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.
ThankGod, a student from the technical school’s Mechanical Department, was said to have drowned while bathing in the borrow pit last Friday after participating in a grass cutting activity at the school.
According to sources, kids from the school had gone for a grass cutting exercise earlier in the day. Some of them went to the borrow pit to freshen themselves after they stopped working at 11 a.m.
“As they were bathing, it was discovered that the boy was drowning. Some of the students who were with him brought him out and then alerted the school authority,” a source said.
The deceased, on the other hand, apparently died on his way to the hospital and was officially declared dead by hospital management upon arrival.
According to one of our sources, the principal was approached and ordered to rush the drowning youngster to the hospital, but he instead requested that the labor master be summoned.
However, the labor master was not there at the time of the occurrence, according to reports.
The principal was accused of videotaping the children because he believed they were most likely acting.
Eventually, efforts were made to locate a commercial tricycle, dubbed “Keke,” to transport the student to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
As a result of the heinous incident, students at the school reportedly staged a huge protest, vandalizing a building housing the school’s principal’s office.
“It was a sudden unnatural death, SUD,” said DSP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, who verified the occurrence to journalists.
“He (the boy) drowned in a pond on the school grounds while working. He was occupied with his work. He died on his way to the hospital, according to the PPRO.
