The Ondo State Police Command, the Olowo of Owo kingdom, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye and the chairman of the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Anselm Ologunwa, have all denied the arrest of the attackers of St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, where no fewer than 40 people were killed and many injured recently.
Recall that terrorists had invaded the church on June 5, 2022, killing no fewer than 40 people and injuring many other worshippers.
A social media report said the suspected terrorists were arrested by a joint team of men of the Nigerian Army, Amotekun Corps and other security agencies as well as the local hunters, on Thursday.
The report said the suspects were taken to the palace of Olowo. It was gathered that when people heard about the news, they started besieging the palace to catch the glimpse of the suspects.
But the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, denied the report saying no suspect was arrested and taken to the palace. He had told the people that besieged the palace, in Owo dialect, that the attackers would soon be arrested.
Also, the Director of Social Communications of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo, Rev. Fr. Augustine Ikwu, however, said they were not privy to the arrest.
In an interview with The PUNCH, Oba ogunnoye said he had not been informed about the arrest of suspects in connection with the Owo attack.
He said, “I can’t confirm it (the arrest) because I have not been informed by the security people. I just read it on the social media but we will be patient for the security agency on it.”
The state chairman of CAN, Ologunwa, said, “I don’t have such information and I can’t comment on the matter. I will implore us to be patient, let us have the details of the matter.”
