Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party was declared the victor of the Osun gubernatorial election more than 24 hours ago, but the All Progressives Congress (APC) has yet to extend its congratulations.
The incumbent governor, Gboyega Oyetola, was defeated by the PDP candidate in a fiercely contested race.
In the 3,763 unit poll, the former senator prevailed in 17 of the 30 local government regions. Oyetola received 375,027 votes, compared to 403,371 for Adeleke.
On Sunday, Oyetola spoke, but he declined to congratulate his rival.
But so far, InsightnaijaTV reports that the APC has yet to congratulate the new governor because they don’t want to outdo the current governor.
According to the publication, a source informed InsightnaijaTV reporter that the ruling party is researching the election results.
He said: “We cannot say anything yet because the governor is yet to speak. What if we reject and the candidate concedes?
What if we congratulate and the candidate decides to go to court? Don’t forget that has a right to seek legal redress.
“So, as things stand now, we have to wait for his position on the outcome of the election.”
