President Muhammadu Buhari’s non-appearance at Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s re-election rally on Tuesday in Osogbo, according to the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, was a hint that he disapproved of any attempts to rig the governorship race on Saturday.
The security agencies were then urged in a statement obtained in Osogbo and signed by the PDP caretaker chairman, Akindele Adekunle, to take a page from that and refuse an illegal instruction to rig Saturday’s election.
The statement said, in part, “Buhari’s absence from the rally was a signal of his opposition to any attempt by the APC National Chairman, Adamu Abdullahi, to rig the governorship race. We urge law enforcement to defy unjustified directives and defend the democratic process.
“President Buhari now eyeing his own legacy clearly snubbed the Osogbo rally. It is now left to security chiefs to know that aiding and abetting rigging are not only criminal but also carry heavy repercussions afterwards.”
“We particularly condemn Governor Oyetola for his assertion that he would not hand over power even before the election was held. We find the statement as anti-democracy and a declaration of war against the democratic process.”
Kola Olabisi, the media adviser to the Osun APC chairman, did not respond to messages left for him as of the time this report was filed, and attempts to reach him by phone were unsuccessful.
