According to the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, a seven-story structure that was under construction on Banana Island in the state’s Ikoyi neighbourhood collapsed because it was “unapproved”.
Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, went to the location “immediately” to evaluate the situation and initiate an inquiry.

As it was learned that the disaster happened on First Avenue in the exclusive area of some of the wealthiest Nigerians, a source with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) disclosed that several employees were trapped under the wreckage.
“Few injured people are receiving medical attention. No one has died. The sad occurrence occurred when casting was taking place, according to a statement from Mukaila Sanusi, the ministry’s deputy director for public affairs.
The public is urged to maintain their composure and to wait for additional information from the government as soon as it becomes available, he said.
