Former Inspector-General of Police (I-G) Mr. Mike Okiro claimed Sen. Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) nominee for president in 2023, could repair Nigeria since he fixed Lagos as governor.
At the summit planning committee’s launch for Tinubu’s support group, “Defect Together Movement for Tinubu-Shettima 2023,” Okiro made this statement on Friday in Abuja.
He claimed that Tinubu was a visionary with the ability to improve Nigeria because his record of growth was so obvious.
When Tinubu was elected governor of Lagos, robbery, murder, and OPC were at their highest levels in the city, and residents were fleeing the city.
“Then, Asiwaju made a special request to the I-G that if he wanted Lagos to be peaceful, he should bring Okiro back to Lagos .
“That was how I found myself back in Lagos, so I worked along with him to be able to keep Lagos calm.
”I left Lagos in glory to the extent that I was promoted from Commissioner of Police to DIG, all glory goes to Asiwaju.
“If as governor of Lagos, he did it, I have no doubt in my mind therefore, that given this onerous task of championing the course of the entire Nigeria, he is going to replicate what he did in Lagos,” he said.
Okiro said that although he was campaigning for Tinubu, ”but it is what I know I am only telling you that one plus one is two.”
Okiro thanked the organisation for choosing him as its Chairman, Board of Trustees, and he promised to work with them to realise their mission.
Okiro was picked as BOT chairman because of his abundance of experience, exposure, and understanding, according to Dr. Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, the group’s chairman.
“He had contributed immensely to the development of the nation and had a credible career with the Nigeria Police Force, rising to the position of I-G and served as chairman, Police Service Commission.
“He is a destribalised Nigerian, who has earned the respect of most Nigerians, this in a nutshell is what informed our choice of him .
“He will bring his wealth of experience, exposure, goodwill and foresight to being our chairman, because we believe in him to be able to guide us to the promised land ,” he said.
According to Dr. Umar Yakasai, the movement’s deputy national campaign director, the group conducted a thorough search before choosing Okiro to further its investigation into Tinubu’s plans to improve Nigeria.
Yakasai explained, “This is in light of Okiro’s long-standing friendship with Tinubu and his vantage point to persuade other illustrious individuals to endorse the group’s proposal.
“Okiro came up with the idea for the Amnesty Programme, which brought about peace in the Niger Delta during the late Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration by calming local tensions.
Therefore, in all respects, Sir Mike Okiro is deserving of recognition as Nigeria’s preeminent statesman, he continued.
