Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State, has revealed why he adopted Tobi Amusan, the gold medalist in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the 2022 World Athletics Championship.
The governor disclosed that Tobi Amusan’s career was advanced by his recent adoption of her.
In a statement of congratulations to Amusan for helping Nigeria win the women’s 100-meter hurdles gold medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championship, the governor made reference to this.
Amusan became the first Nigerian woman to win a World Championship thanks to her accomplishment in the semifinals of the sporting event.
However, in a statement he personally signed on Monday in Abeokuta, Abiodun claimed that Amusan’s success had given the residents of Ogun State reason to be happy.
Additionally, the governor wished Amusan success.
“We congratulate and celebrate with Ms. Tobi Amusan, a proud daughter of Ogun State whom I adopted a few months ago to help her career, on her gold-winning performance in the women’s 100-meter hurdles in a time that broke the world mark (12.06 seconds).
“As a State, we are pleased with your accomplishments and wish you continued success in the years to come.”
On April 26, the governor adopted Amusan.
After Mr. Sunday Dare, the minister of youth and sports development, visited the governor, the adoption took place. State governors, regular people, and businesses adopted some of the Tokyo Olympics athletes through his “adopt-a-talent” program by making financial contributions straight to their accounts to support their early preparations for the Games.
Mr. Abiodun told Sunday Dare during a courtesy call that he chose to adopt Amusan not only because she is a local of the area but also because she epitomizes Nigerian skill and tenacity.
Amusan first made her mark in 2013 by winning a silver medal in the African Youth Championships. In 2015, in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, she won a gold medal at the African Junior Athletics Championship.
She was crowned the African champion of the competition for 2019 and the Commonwealth for 2018.
Additionally, Amusan has twice won the African Games.
She was ranked fourth in the world after her success in the 2019 World Championships in Doha.
