Olusegun Obasanjo’s decision to support Peter Obi, according to former presidential aide Reno Omokri, is not unrelated to the civil war in Nigeria.
Although other candidates have the ability to rule, Peter Obi is the kind of character the country needs, according to Obasanjo, who made the declaration in support of Peter Obi of the Labour Party to win the 2023 presidential election in an open letter to Nigerian youths less than nine weeks before the general elections.
Reno Omokri, however, a fervent supporter of Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and presidential contender for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserted that Obasanjo’s support for Obi is intended to heal the wound left by the civil war of 1966.
Over three million Nigerians, largely of Igbo descent, were slain during the three-year Nigerian civil war, which began in 1967 when the Eastern region of old tried to split from Nigeria.

According to him, the late Yar’Adua insisted on Goodluck Jonathan even though the former President preferred former Rivers State Governor Peter Odili to serve as Vice President in 2007.
“President Obasanjo is a good-hearted man. He has always wanted a President from the SE[South East] or close to the SE[South East]as a way to heal the Civil War wounds.
“In 2007, he wanted Peter Odili, but Yar’adua insisted on Governor Jonathan as VP. What Obj [Obasanjo] did won’t affect the election!”
