Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, has issued a warning to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s campaign for president of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
On Wednesday, Tinubu and a few APC leaders paid a visit to Obasanjo at his home in the capital of Ogun State, Abeokuta.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, his deputy Noimot Salako-Oyedele, and two previous governors—Olusegun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel—accompanied Tinubu.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila, former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Nuhu Ribadu, and former temporary national chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, were also present at the meeting (EFCC).
After the meeting, Obasanjo and Tinubu both declined to speak to the media.
However, Gbajabiamila spoke about what happened at the meeting between Obasanjo and Tinubu just a day later.
He said that Obasanjo expressed support for Tinubu’s presidential campaign and even prayed for him.
Asiwaju Tinubu and I were two of the eight persons travelling to Obasanjo’s home at the time because we didn’t want many people to learn about the meeting. Therefore, Obasanjo and five other members of his team were to meet us.
But when we arrived, we discovered something pleasantly surprising: a sizable group of our fans had already arrived at the former president’s home and were waiting for us.
The words emanating from people professing to be Tinubu supporters, however, are “unhelpful,” according to Obasanjo, who made this assertion in a statement made by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Saturday.
Obasanjo agreed to allow neither side to make a statement at Tinubu’s request because the former president described the conversation as “more brotherly than political” during the visit.
“Those claiming to be insiders at the meeting publishing statements on the conversation and those crediting me with statements I had not made are adversaries of the visitor and are not doing the visit any good,” remarked Obasanjo.
