Linda Igwetu’s older sister, Chinenye Igwetu, has disclosed that her sister was killed by a police officer while on her way to celebrate her National Youth Service Corps graduation in July 2018.
She further revealed that her sister died at the Garki General Hospital in Abuja.
She demanded N200 million in compensation when she appeared before the Independent Investigation Panel on Human Rights Violations by the dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squad and other components of the Nigerian Police Force in Abuja.
On Monday, however, a lawyer for the Nigerian Police claimed that the panel lacked authority to hear the matter because it had already been heard by a Federal Capital Territory high court.
The panel dismissed the claim, claiming that it had the jurisdiction to investigate all types of human rights violations in Nigeria.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) stated that “With the consent of the panel, she (Igwetu) adopted the final written address adding that the panel should determine whether the police were obliged to protect the lives of citizens and whether the police is vicariously liable for the death of Linda Igwetu.”
