The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) seized 33 foreign-made semi-automatic firearms and 15 gun cleaning kits from a criminal hideout in Imo.
This was revealed by Mr. Michael Ogar, the NSCDC Commandant in Imo, while speaking to reporters in Owerri on Thursday.
26 double-barrel firearms, five pump actions, two sniper rifles, and 15 sets of gun cleaning kits, according to Ogar.
According to the commandant, his officers were able to set up an ambush for a few days after receiving credible intelligence on the whereabouts of criminals before raiding the hideout and collecting the things.
Despite the fact that the guns were located outside of the criminals’ operating region, he stated that the Command was working closely with other security agencies to track them down, as no arrests have been made thus far.
Ogar further stated that an investigation was underway to identify the weapons’ sources in order to apprehend and prosecute them.
He reassured Imo residents and indigenes planning to return home for the holiday season that the Command would ensure a smooth celebration.
“Acting on a reliable tip-off, we laid ambush and after a few days, we were able to recover these items somewhere around Owerri that we cannot disclose now as a result of the ongoing investigation.
“Illicit possession of a firearm is directly related to criminality and that is why we are investigating so as to unravel the suppliers of these items.
“We remain committed to ensuring a hitch-free celebration this yuletide and we assure Imo sons and daughters who will be returning that Imo is safe,’’ he said.
He urged locals to assist the Command in overcoming the barrier of information access by giving relevant information on illegal movement and activities.
