The Department of State Services (DSS) has disputed accusations that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is being held in deplorable conditions.
IPOB and Kanu’s family have accused the secret agency of mistreating the separatist leader and depriving him food while in its captivity, InsightnaijaTV reports.
They also accused the secret police of withholding the IPOB leader’s medical report after drawing his blood 21 times and refusing him the right to change his clothes.
According to DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya, who addressed during a news conference on Tuesday, contrary to assertions made by IPOB and Kanu’s lawyers, the Biafra agitator receives the best treatment and utmost comfort while in its custody.
As ordered by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Afunanya stated that the IPOB leader had full rights.
As a result, he urged Nigerians to dismiss IPOB’s accusations, claiming that Kanu is free to worship and practice his religion.
The DSS spokesman said: “The service denies all the inciting allegations by IPOB and state that Nnamdi Kanu is not in an anyway maltreated in custody.
“Accusation of maltreatment negate the services standard operating procedure on the implementation of rights of a suspect.
“Nnamdi Kanu enjoys full luxury in the holding facility incomparable of any of it type anywhere in the country. He is accorded full rights and privileges. He is never denied his rights of worship or freedom from his religious practice.
“Adequate attention is paid to Kanu’s health. He has unhindered access to the best medical care and doctors. “The story of Kanu being starved is fallacious.
“He could not have been starved as he enjoys meals of his choice. That he is not allowed a change of clothing is also false. He is regularly allowed change of clothing as against what is presented to the public by IPOB propagandists.
“It is unfortunate that some elements decided to use outright misinformation to represent the state of affairs.”
