A professor of political economy and management expert, Pat Utomi, opined that Nigeria Politics has been reduced to State Capture.
The political economist who was a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics stated that Nigeria at the moment is not being governed.
Utomi said, ““Political parties do not have programs, do not have a direction to make any difference in people’s lives.
“The truth of the matter is that this is the most miserable place to live on earth today, all the statistics say so.”
“Today, we have overtaken India in terms of the total number of the world’s poorest people,” he continued.
It’s as though Nigeria is in several civil conflicts, according to Utomi, a founding member of the National Consultative Front (NCF).
“With all the killings every day, they are dying of insecurity; more people are killed in Nigeria every day than in most of the world’s biggest civil wars.”
He reeled off, “Today, we are dying more from Malaria than any other people in the world.”
According to him, the basis for this misunderstanding arises from the fact that Nigeria lacks a serious opposition capable of speaking alternatives and dealing with major concerns.
While stating that the country has gotten more corrupt since the election of this government, he also stated that discussions about major concerns must begin to fill socio-political areas.
He claimed that many well-intentioned Nigerians poured their hearts and souls into bringing the current government to power on the anti-corruption platform; but, these Nigerians, according to Utomi, have been disillusioned because the administration has shown to be much more corrupt than before.
The political economist believes that the country needs to have a debate with itself about how to save itself.
“We haven’t been able to change the political process to get money out of politics, to get people out of politics who shouldn’t be in politics,” he said, adding, “Politics has been reduced to how do you take a state and utilize it for your own aggrandizement.” If politics were not about state capture, you would see people willing to make self-sacrifices in order to gain immortality by making a difference in the lives of others, but unfortunately, that is not the situation in our society.”
Professor Utomi proposed a remedy for the future, stating that Nigeria should follow the lead of South Korea and eliminate money politics. He believes it is unfortunate that Nigerian leaders lack empathy for the people.
“Politicians in Nigeria have no empathy for the people… Prof Utomi said, “There is a tremendous gap between the political class and the masses.”
“Poverty governs the land, but do you see it reflected in the political class’s lives?” He responded, “No, you don’t.”
He urged Nigerians to reclaim their country, emphasizing the importance of civil society involvement.
Prof Utomi, speaking to the “complicit middle” class, which he claims is a key contributor to the country’s problems, urged the middle to quit folding their arms and stand up to the political class, which he claims is only in it for the money.
