Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who were sent from various states to Ekiti in preparation for the governor’s election on June 18, 2022, are complaining that the authorities are allegedly refusing to pay their allowances.
To ensure security during the governorship election, the NSCDC has deployed 9,747 men from the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Kogi, Kwara, and Edo commands.
When their peers from other security agencies received their payments two weeks after the election, some of the disgruntled officers complained to SaharaReporters that the agency had refused to pay them, which fueled suspicions of embezzlement.
They claimed that after risking their lives day and night to ensure appropriate security during the governorship election, the majority of them were not provided with housing in Ekiti.
The officers pledged to abstain from the Osun State governorship election on July 16 if the government does not pay their allowances.
“Two weeks after the governorship election in Ekiti state was conducted, officers and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps from Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, Kogi, Osun, Oyo and Lagos who participated in the election are yet to receive their allowance,” an operative told SaharaReporters.
“Our hope was dashed a week after the election was conducted with the hope that the money will drop in our individual accounts.
“The personnel of the Nigeria Police Force got their allowance paid to them on Friday, June 17, a day before the election. There was no official communication as to the reasons for the delay in the payment of this allowance.
“The amount varies from one level to another. Using the police as a model, the least officer that participated got N40,000. Some personnel came from NHQ too including the one mentioned.”
Sola Odumosun, speaking on behalf of the NSCDC, claimed that the officers for the Ekiti governorship election had not yet received their allowances.
But he asserted that the delay was the fault of the Office of the Accountant-General.
Odumosun said that the agency’s top executives and Commandant General (CG) were making every attempt to persuade the authorities to release the funds, noting that he was also affected.
