Numerous persons were reportedly hurt when some unidentified gunmen invaded the hamlet of Orogwe in Imo State.
According to reports that reached InsightnaijaTV on Tuesday, there was commotion in the Owerri Local Government Area of Imo State when the attackers invaded the neighborhood and started firing randomly.
Residents told reporters that at least seven persons had been killed by gunshots, while other injured people had been transported to the emergency room of the Federal Medical Center in Owerri.
According to reports, the unrest began when security personnel thought to be from the Ebubeagu Security organization raided the neighborhood and abducted a young person.
The yet-to-be-identified gunmen apparently emerged and started firing randomly in response to the unexpected raid by the presumed security group.
“Ebubeagu people came and took away a youth from the community. On Monday night, some men with guns came to the community and stormed a building site and opened fire. Seven persons died while others wounded were rushed to the FMC Owerri,” said a resident who spoke anonymously with The PUNCH.
An okada rider who was passing through was injured, InsightnaijaTV has learned.
The young man was also hurried to the FMC Owerri emergency department, where he received medical attention.
Villagers said there were more casualties than were actually confirmed by the hospital, according to a source at the FMC, but the hospital only confirmed six bodies, contrary to what residents claimed.
According to the source, there were many concerned friends, family members, and well-wishers of the victims crammed inside the hospital’s emergency room.
“The emergency unit is filled. Many people here. The unit is rowdy. Six dead bodies are here while others that are critically injured are being attended to by medical personnel,” the source at the FMC said.
