Luis Suarez scored against his former side as Atletico Madrid racked up more misery over Ronald Koeman with a 20-minute win over Barcelona to climb to the top of La Liga in points.
The defeat to Benfica in the Champions League has sparked speculation that Koeman could be sacked with another loss in the Spanish capital and this result will not help the Dutchman’s cause.
Atleti started strong and took the lead after 23 minutes when a pass from Joao Felix and Suarez freed Thomas Lemar at a disadvantage for the Frenchman who passed MarcAndre ter Stegen.
Suarez lost a golden opportunity to make two soon after with the former Barcelona striker who scored a goal from beyond the far post when he should have found the back of the net.
However, Suarez made up for it by scoring just before half-time, taking the time to take his place after a great combination of Felix and Lemar on the left flank on a quick counterattack.
Ansu Fati came off the bench with 25 minutes left before Antoine Griezmann was presented to face his former side, but there would be no change in the dynamics of the game as Atletico Madrid saw victory comfortable.
