President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that leaders who take the oath of office by swearing with the Holy Book should be mindful not to abuse the people’s and God’s faith in them.
President Buhari, who was on a working visit to Nasarawa State, told retired Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad 1 during a courtesy visit to the palace of the Emir of Lafia that he has no intention of serving beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms as Nigeria’s leader.
According to him, ”The traditional ruler is on a terminal appointment. Constitutionally, we (elected public office holders) are not. I cannot go beyond two terms and I have sworn by the Holy Quran that I will uphold the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
”Politics apart, whenever we are made to swear by the Holy Quran, we have to be very careful. We must make sure that we do not abuse the trust God has given us as leaders.
”I have seen former Governors here, I too I am going to be one sooner or later,” he said.
President Buhari expressed his gratitude to the people of Nasarawa State for their warm welcome, noting that the North-Central state had changed since his last visit in 2019.
He praised both the immediate former Governor and Senator representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, and the current Governor, Abdullahi Sule, for the state’s commendable initiatives and achievements.
