David Amess, a British lawmaker, died as a result of repeated stabbings in his area.
The police seized a knife at the scene of the crime, according to the BBC.
A suspect has been detained, according to police.
Iain Duncan Smith MP, his co-parliamentarian, reacted to the news by calling his death “unfortunate for the country.”
“Shocked to hear my long time good friend/colleague has died as a result of a desperate attack in his surgery doing what all MPs have a duty to do: looking out for their constituents often as a last hope when all else has failed. My prayers go out to his family,” he tweeted.
Our correspondent checked Amess’ personal website and discovered that he had previously advised that he would be in the area.
“My next surgery will be taking place on Friday 15th October at Belfairs Methodist Church, 251 Eastwood Road North, Leigh-on-Sea, SS9 4NG,” a statement on his website read.
