Following the death of a student, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, who was allegedly tormented by classmates, Lagos State has closed Dowen College, Lekki, indefinitely.
Oromoni was believed to have died as a result of internal wounds purportedly caused by beatings by his classmates in an attempt to compel him into joining a cult, an allegation disputed by the school.
A video of the youngster with an injured mouth, swollen legs and stomach, and writhing in anguish went viral as well, with the actual cause(s) of his death still unknown at the time of reporting this story.
The state administration, however, declared the school’s closure in a statement issued by the Ministry of Education’s Head of Public Affairs Unit, Mr Ganiu Lawal, on Friday.
This would be the state government’s second statement on the subject in less than two hours.
Following a meeting with school management and personnel, Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, announced the closure, according to the statement.
It further read in part: “The commissioner called for calm, saying no effort will be spared in getting to the root of the incident.”
