One of the prisoners from Suleja who escaped during the recent prison break at the Kuje Medium Security Correctional Center in Abuja on July 5 has been apprehended by the Niger police command.
On July 5, a large group of terrorists carried out a daring attack on the prison, bombed their way inside, and freed 879 prisoners, including 64 who had been charged with terrorism.
The fugitive was captured on July 9 at 8:30 p.m., according to a statement made in Minna on Monday by the command’s public relations officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun. The patrol squad was on patrol between the General Hospital, Suleja, and Bakassi.
According to him, the police patrol squad assaulted a known complex on the basis of reliable intelligence and detained a 54-year-old man named Kazeem Murtala.
The prisoner admitted under questioning that he had fled Kuje Custodial Center during the assault after spending two years in detention for an offense he had committed.
The patrol team’s actions have been praised by Monday Bala Kuryas, Commissioner of Police, Niger Command.
Kuryas is cited in the statement as ordering that the detainee be returned to the custody facility, which has been done.
The public’s assistance in providing the police with vital information that aided in the fast capture of the fugitive escaping was also appreciated by the CP.
The command urged locals to continue providing trustworthy information that could help in the capture of further suspect offenders and the fight against crime and criminality in the state.
