Because of possible poisoning, the Kogi State administration has temporarily banned the consumption of beef (cow meat) in the state.
The state capital, Lokoja, was recently reported to have seen an unexplained death of no less than 20 cows.
InsightnaijaTV gathered the occurrence has sparked alarm in the state, as the strange deaths of the cows are assumed to be the result of poisoning.
In response to the occurrence, the state government issued a one-week warning to citizens of the state not to consume beef.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, April 7 by the State Director of Veterinary Services, Dr Salau Mohammed Tarawa, authorities from the Ministry jumped into action after receiving the complaint and collected some of the dead cows spotted in the market.
Other cows were allegedly transferred to Osara, Ajaokuta, Obajana, Kotonkarfe, and Kakanda for probable sale to unsuspecting members of the public, according to Tarawa.
He explained that the Ministry of Agriculture is working with security services to invite the herders involved for questioning, after which appropriate action will be taken.
Mallam Sani Abdulganiyu, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Agriculture, also spoke out, urging the people of the state to work with the Ministry to fix the situation without endangering their health.
The cows were discovered by some personnel of the unit in Lokoja, according to Bayode Emmanuel, Head Agro Rangers Unit Kogi State Command, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
“The cows emerged from the back of the State Secretariat complex where they had gone to graze. All of a sudden, they started behaving funny, slumping, and died instantly within minutes.
“Upon interrogation, the Fulani herder said he was coming out with them after grazing before the incident happened,” he added.
According to Alex Agiri, the State Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC’s Kogi State Command, the State Commandant, Suleiman Ibrahim Mafara, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter to determine where the dead cows grazed and to prevent the sale and consumption of infected beef in the state.
