The University of Ibadan’s Governing Council has appointed Prof. Kayode Adebowale as the university’s new substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The Governing Council announced Adebowale’s administration on Thursday, a professor of Chemistry and the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Chairman of the UI Governing Council, confirmed this to our correspondent over the phone.
He said, “Yes, Prof. Adebowale has been named UI VC.”
Sixteen candidates applied for the position, with Prof. Remi Raji withdrawing from the race, reducing the number to 15.
The screening of the 15 candidates took place in the Council Chambers and included both a presentation and an interview with council members who scored each candidate’s performance.
Prof. Adeyinka Aderinto, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, A Academics; Prof. Babatunde Ekanola, acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. H. Fawehinmi, Prof. O. Farounbi, Prof. B. Salako; Prof. G. Aderounmu, and Prof. O. Ademowo also made the final stage of the screening.
The selection process began in May 2020, a few months before the tenure of the previous VC, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, came to an end. The process was hampered by allegations and counter-allegations, and it was eventually canceled.
The previous VC was accused of having anointed a candidate, but because his tenure expired about a year ago, the university was unable to appoint a substantive Vice-Chancellor until Aderinto emerged.
Odigie-Oyegun, the newly appointed council chairman, stated that the process should be restarted once a decision was reached at a council meeting.
