Yakubu Dogara, a former House of Representatives speaker, claims that he is not now a member of any political party, but that he would solely support independent candidates for elected offices in the general elections of 2023.
On Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Wednesday, Dogara, who previously served as the federal representative for the Dass/Tafawa Balewa/Bogoro Federal Constituency, claimed that the fact that he supports candidates from different parties for different elective positions does not indicate that he is a “unstable character,” as claimed by his critics.
Before the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary, Dogara was a well-known APC stalwart. The former speaker was one of those who vehemently opposed the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the party and later went public to support Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), against Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nonetheless, Dogara has voiced opposition to the PDP’s Bala Mohammed’s bid for reelection as governor of Bauchi State and has backed the APC’s Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, a former chief of the air staff of Nigeria, as the party’s candidate for governor in the March 18 election in Bauchi.

When asked on Wednesday if he belongs to the PDP or the APC, Dogara said that he is not politically unstable.
Dogara stated that: “I am supporting candidates; I am not doing any political party for now, I am supporting candidates.
“Everybody knows that I backed Atiku Abubakar for Presidency for reasons I told the whole world but in Bauchi State, before primaries were concluded, I had supported the aspiration Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar who is the current APC governorship candidate and I have my candidates for House of Assembly in my constituency.
“I have Senatorial and House of Representatives candidates that I helped midwife them into those positions, and I can’t abandon them for political stability.”
