Lawan Jimeta, the new Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police for Zone 5, which includes the states of Edo and Delta, was sworn in on Thursday in Benin.
AIG Ahmad Abdurrahman, who had been redeployed to the Police Academy (POLAD) in Wudi, Kano state, was replaced by Jimeta.
Jimeta told NAN immediately after taking over that if any police in the zone was found to be corrupt, he would be ruthless.
“I abhor corruption and so will deal decisively with any officer who is corrupt or seen to be corrupt.
“So officers in the zone are expected to wake-up to their duties, be diligent and also serve the public humanely.
“They should shun corruption in whatever form it comes and ensure they respect human rights, while also been professional in their conduct,” he said.
The AIG stated that he was familiar with Edo and Delta states, having previously served as a Commissioner of Police in Edo.
He went on to say that his time as a former Commissioner of Police in the state had exposed him to the terrain, difficulties, and best practices for dealing with them.
The AIG promised that he would put his previous knowledge to good use in dealing with security challenges in the zone.
Jimeta further stated that he would be led by the vision and mission of the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali, and would build on them in order to attain the goals.
He also promised to work cooperatively with the zone’s police commissioners to guarantee that crimes and criminalities were contained within the zone.
AIG Ahmad Abdurrahman, who handed over to Jimeta, remarked that it was common practice in the force to relocate officers from one location to another on short notice.
We’re regimental, he says, and we’re disciplined force men, so when you’re told to do something, you do it.
He emphasized that his redeployment was simply a change of offices for him and the new AIG, Jimeta, and urged inhabitants in both states to work with the new AIG.
“He is a seasoned and very discipline officer, and I know within the shortest possible time the people in the zone will get the good leadership they deserve and have been yearning for,” Abdurrahman said.
Before his current redeployment as AIG, zone 5, Jimeta served as CP Edo from November 2019 to June 2020, CP Bauchi from June 2020 to March 2021, and Commandant POLAD, Wudi, Kano state from March 2021.
