Renowned political economist Professor Pat Utomi has stated that labour unions are now leading protests because political parties are failing, and that opposition political parties in Nigeria are not living up to expectations as they are supposed to be at the forefront of protests against hardship and suffering in the nation.
In a post on his X handle on Thursday, Professor Utomi expressed his dissatisfaction, claiming that the opposition parties have failed in their duties by doing nothing to stop the ruling party from mismanaging the country’s affairs while the populace struggles with rising economic hardship and the rising cost of living.

He claims that opposition parties spearhead demonstrations in other countries, which is why establishing legitimate parties is essential.
“The protests have come and gone,” he declared. Power says they are political. What did they expect them to be, apolitical. Labour Unions are acting because political parties are failing. Protests are led by opposition parties in other places. For this reason, creating legitimate parties is essential.
Recall that protests against the nation’s high cost of living, inflation, insecurity, and hardship were led by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and other relevant unions.
The government was served with a 14-day nationwide strike notice by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress due to their inability to carry out the agreements made after the fuel subsidy was removed.
