Gunmen who stormed a police roadblock at MTD Junction, Garriki, Akwuke in the Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State on Thursday killed two policemen by shooting them.
According to sources, the firing caused locals to flee frantically.
Two cops and a few other people have been slain in a shooting near Gariki, MTD area, according to a source who texted our correspondent.
Around 9.10 am, the assailants reportedly opened fire at the checkpoint.
The command’s tactical team and other operatives, according to the state police’s public relations officer, Daniel Ndukwe, are already on the trail of the criminals.
Ndukwe said, “There was an attack on policemen on stop and search this morning along Agbani Road, close to Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway, by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums.
“However, details of the incident are still sketchy, while the command’s tactical/operational operatives have been mobilised and are on the trail of the miscreants. Further development will be communicated, please.”
In a related event, Friday Eboka, the commissioner of police for Rivers State, has mandated the dispatch of several officers to the state’s Oyigbo Local Government Area in an effort to apprehend those responsible for the ambush-related death of a police officer.
The state police command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, issued a statement on Thursday on behalf of the CP that contained the directive.
“This is coming on the heels of the gruesome murder of an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Chris Josiah, attached to the Afam Divisional Police Headquarters on June 28, 2022, while returning home after work.
“The deceased officer was ambushed by five yet-to-be-identified masked men, who opened fire on the officer along the Assemblies of God Church, Obeama, Oyigbo, and shot him dead inside his Lexus RX 300 SUV,” the statement added.
