As Uruguay defeated Ghana 2-0, Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored twice, but it wasn’t enough to keep the defeated South Americans in the World Cup.
With a win over Portugal on Friday, South Korea edged out the former champions to claim second place in group H. Uruguay’s famous scorer Luis Suarez broke down in tears as he contemplated the likely end of his World Cup career together with fellow legend Edinson Cavani.

Andre Ayew’s soft penalty was easily saved by Sergio Rochet in the 21st minute, giving Uruguay a chance to take the lead. Ghana, who memorably missed a penalty attempt in extra time in a quarterfinal match against Uruguay in South Africa 12 years ago, squandered the opportunity to take the lead.
In the 26th minute, De Arrascaeta headed the ball over the line from close range following an effort by Suarez, and six minutes later, Suarez again participated in the build-up as Uruguay scored their first goals of the tournament.
The result moved Uruguay into third place on four points, level with South Korea, who narrowly advanced to the next round with more goals scored overall after defeating Portugal 2-1 with a late winner. Ghana earned three points to place last in the group.
