The names and images of the detainees who escaped from the Abolongo Medium Security Custodial Centre in Oyo town, Oyo State, have been released by the Ministry of Interior.
Following an attack on the facility on Friday, October 22, 2021, many of the inmates in the awaiting trial section escaped.
Late Friday night, the ministry posted the statistics of the escaping detainees on its Facebook page.
The information included the names, photographs, and nature of the offenses committed by the fugitives.
Members of the public were advised against assisting the suspects in any manner, claiming that it was a criminal to do so.
The note read, “‘Names and faces of wanted persons who escaped from the Oyo Custodial Centre on Friday 22nd October, 2021.
“Please note that these persons are dangerous!
“Kindly contact the nearest police station or security agency close to you when you sight any of these persons.
“Note: It is a crime punishable under the law to render any form of assistance to this persons.”
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, had last Sunday visited the facility and while adressing journalists, vowed that all those on the run would be brought back.dead or alive.
He said, ” We are going after every single inmate that escaped from custody. We shall hunt them to the end of the earth. All the security agencies in the country are on their trail. We shall not rest or tire until we bring the last one in, dead or alive.
“I am calling on all Nigerians, to, as a patriotic duty, report to the nearest security post, any sighting of an escaped inmate or any information that could lead to the arrest of any fleeing inmate. A handsome reward awaits such informants.
“I will need to add that it is a criminal offence, punishable by a jail term, to offer any assistance whatsoever, not even giving a cup of water, to any inmate that escaped from lawful custody. You cannot help them in any way, absolutely, by way of cash, food, clothing, medical care, employment, road direction and any form of help, other than to encourage them to turn themselves in, and report their sighting to law enforcement.
“I am assuring Nigerians that there is no hiding place for any inmate that escaped from our facilities. This is because we have the records of all the inmates, including their biometric data, which are being forwarded to the Interpol, making it impossible for them to travel, apply for any travel document, engage in any financial transaction or present themselves at any border post, in any country in the world. They are fugitives and will remain on the run until we apprehend them. And we shall surely apprehend them.”
