A devastated Kenyan father has launched a lawsuit against his indifferent son, claiming that he has been abandoned and forsaken in the village after sacrificing his productive years and investments on the son.
Gideon Kisira Cherowo, the aggrieved father, told the Kitale High Court on Monday that his son had allowed city life to blind him and left him (the father) to fend for himself.
Cherowo, who is 73 years old, also wants the court to order his son to pay him 20% of his monthly wage as compensation, claiming that he is entitled to it after toiling to establish a better life for his son.
According to the court documents, the old father paid his son’s dowry during his wedding, which included an undisclosed sum of money, four cows, and other valuables.
Cherowo explained that his son, who had gotten a job with a government agency in Nairobi, refused to look after him and instead shared his pay, allowances, bonuses, and insurance with his wife, while his father lived in abject poverty in the countryside.
“I used all the resources I had to enable him to be in a good position so that he can help our family. I request 20 per cent of his salary to be given to me as the father,” Cherowo pleaded with the court.
“I have tried several times, for years, to seek assistance from my son, but all in vain. He is the only one, out of my four children who is gainfully employed,” Cherowo told the court.
