Facebook Inc. announced Thursday that it has changed its name to Meta, marking the social media giant’s first big rebranding.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the name change, which reflects the company’s expanding objectives beyond social media, during the Facebook Connect conference. The company’s ambition for developing a “metaverse” that combines online social experiences with the physical world was outlined in an accompanying news release.
The annual Facebook Connect conference brings together virtual reality developers, content providers, and marketers. This year’s event has a strong emphasis on the metaverse concept, which has grown in popularity as a result of blockchain technology.
