The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied that Willie Obiano, the state’s immediate former governor, has been discharged.
Obiano and his wife, Ebelechukwe, were questioned by EFCC officers at the Murtala Mohammad International Airport in Lagos on Thursday, according to a report posted on Friday morning.
However, EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren told reporters on Friday morning that the news suggesting that the former governor had been released was false and should be ignored.
Obiano remains in the anti-graft agency’s custody, according to an EFCC spokesman, and is now being transferred to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja for additional interrogation.
“He has not been released. it’s fake news. He is in our custody and is currently being moved to Abuja”, the EFCC spokesman said.
Obiano had been on the EFCC’s watchlist for months, according to Uwujaren, but his immunity as governor kept him from being arrested until he transferred authority over to his successor, Charles Soludo.
According to him, the EFCC had asked the Nigeria Immigration Service to furnish information on the former governor’s movements out of the nation through airports or other exit points.
