The All Progressives Congress supporters and stalwarts were treated to a hilarious session when the Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, officially referred to Governor Dapo Abiodun as the ‘Eleyi of Ogun State.’
Even as the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, dubbed Oyebanji the “Emi Lokan of Ekiti,” promising to outperform his constituents.
The banter occurred at a political rally in which the APC’s Ekiti governorship candidate, Biodun Oyebanji, was introduced to the electorate ahead of the June 18 election.
Following Fayemi’s amusing jab, Abiodun was seen giggling as party leaders cheerfully patted him on the back.
Tinubu sparked outrage on social media on June 3 during a presidential campaign in Abeokuta, claiming that it was because of his efforts that President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) made it to Aso Rock after failing three times.
He also referred to Abiodun, whom he jokingly referred to as ‘Eleyi,’ as one of the fruits of his political toil.
“Look at this one (Eleyi) seated behind me, Dapo,” Tinubu had said. “He wouldn’t have become governor without my support.”
Tinubu made the remarks during a speech to APC delegates in Ogun State.
Nigerians were divided over his outburst, with many party stalwarts, including National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu, claiming that the remarks were designed to belittle the president and the governor of Ogun State.
The Bola Tinubu Media Campaign Team refuted allegations that the presidential contender humiliated the governor of Ogun State just 24 hours after the drama.
Bayo Onanuga, the Director of the BAT marketing team, said the remark was “mischievously interpreted.”
