The Edo State police command has reportedly re-arrested 10 prisoners who escaped from the Oko Correctional Centre on Airport Road, Benin and the Benin Correctional Centre on Sapele Road during the EndSars Protest,a protest which saw Prison set on fire as Prisoners stormed out of it.
The Edo state Commissioner of police, Babatunde Kokumo, paraded the 126 people who were suspected to be criminals, including the 10 prisoners who escaped from prison,as well as arsonists and looters of COVID-19 palliatives during the EndSARS protest,at the state’s police headquarters in Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin on Wednesday.

While speaking on the issue,Edo state Commissioner of police, Babatunde Kokumo said“We have commenced actions against the criminals. It will interest you to know that 10 of the criminals that escaped from Oko Correctional Centre on Airport Road, Benin and the Correctional Centre on Sapele Road, Benin have also been brought to book”
“One of the the prisoners, after having escaped from Oko correctional centre, ran back to his home town on the same day, to find and murder the person who stood as prosecution witness in the case that put him behind bars. He has been arrested and he is among the suspects.”
Babatunde Kokumo went on to state that the prisoners who escaped from prison,still went back to their criminal life and they have clearly shown the police was right by re-arresting them.
Babatunde Kokumo also added that another group of 3 prison escapees from the correctional centre in Benin,also went ahead to steal a Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). The Three prisoners who reportedly met at the correctional centre and were caught by the police.
According to the Commissioner,a further two set of escapees equally stole a Toyota Camry car. The two of them also met at the correctional centre and were reportedly arrested by the Okada Division of the Edo State Police Command.
While further speaking on the prisoners, Kokumo said“The fire arms were also recovered from the criminals.Anybody who is armed with a weapon of destruction is no longer embarking on a peaceful protest but ready to carry out violence. We want to assure the good citizens of Edo State that the police have the capacity to provide adequate security for their lives and property. For that reason, we are dominating the public space.”
“The stolen arms and ammunition regrettably will be unleashed on the members of the public. We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that there is total safety. Edo residents should go about their lawful businesses without fear of being molested and without fear of criminals coming to wreck violent attacks,” Babatunde Kokumo concluded.
