A female student of Ogume Grammar School in Ndokwa West Council Area of Delta State was killed, and property worth millions of naira was destroyed, when hoodlums stormed the school with various weapons.
Although no reason was given for the attack, the invaders, who were suspected of being cultists, descended heavily on the principal before she was rushed to the Kwale General Hospital for treatment.
The cultists destroyed the school’s ICT center, principal’s office, her car, and administrative office, among other things.
Meanwhile, the state government announced on Wednesday that the school would be closed until further notice as a result of the attack last week.
Mrs Rose Ezewu, the State Commissioner for Secondary Education, revealed this in Asaba during a meeting with the leaders of the Ogume community, flanked by Hon Charles Emetulu, the member representing Ndokwa West Constituency in the State House of Assembly and House Committee Chairman on Education.
Mrs Ezewu stated that the state government’s decision to close the school was in the best interests of the community and the state as a whole because it was designed to ensure the safety of the school’s teachers and students.
The school’s entire structure and learning materials were destroyed, according to the commissioner.
While urging the community to bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice in order to serve as a deterrent to others, Mrs Ezewu urged community leaders and stakeholders to demonstrate genuine commitment to rebuilding the school in order to encourage the state government.
In his remarks, Hon Charles Emetulu, a member of the State House of Assembly representing Ndokwa West Constituency, who frowned at the miscreants’ unwholesome attitude, added that there was no longer any structure for learning in the school after it was burned down.
Hon Emetulu, who described the incident as sad and unfortunate, stated that the school was one of the best equipped in the area, with a modern science laboratory and ICT center, as well as teaching and learning materials.
The representative of the Okpala-Uku of the Ogbe-Ogume community, His Royal Eminence, Dr Valentine Akpati, the chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) for the school, Chief Emeka Ogeleka, and the chairman of the Ogbe-Ogume Community Development Committee, Chief Kenneth Ogeleka, all praised the government in their separate remarks.
